Degraded State error codes

Reference table of every error code shown in Salad's Degraded State notifications, what each one means and where to fix it.

Every Degraded State notification ends with a number. Find yours below. The codes come from two places: negative codes are raised by the Salad app on Windows while it sets up or starts a job; positive codes come from the compatibility check that runs inside the container environment before each container job.

Container environment and job start (negative codes)

CodeNotification titleWhat it meansGuide
-1Failed to start workloadA job stopped for a reason the app couldn't classify.Failed to start workload
-2Failed to start container environmentThe Linux environment could not be imported into WSL.Failed to start container environment
-3Failed to start container environmentThe environment imported but its service failed to start.Failed to start container environment
-4Failed to start workloadThe job's files could not be downloaded.Downloads slow or failing
-5Failed to start workloadThe job downloaded but could not be started.Failed to start workload
-7GPU drivers out of dateThe job could not be given access to the GPU (driver problem).Salad cannot access your GPU
-10Failed to start workloadThe job took too long to start and was cancelled.Failed to start workload

Any other number means a failure the app couldn't classify ("Unable to run container workload"); codes -6, -8, -9 and -11 are rare and usually clear on the next attempt. If one keeps coming back, send support your logs.

Compatibility check (positive codes)

CodeNotification titleWhat it meansGuide
11Salad cannot access your GPUThe GPU isn't visible inside the container environment.Salad cannot access your GPU
12Salad cannot access your GPUThe GPU responded, but its status couldn't be read.Salad cannot access your GPU
13Insufficient VRAMToo much of the card's VRAM is already in use.Insufficient VRAM
14GPU power limit setThe card's power limit is set below what we support.GPU power limit
15GPU power unavailableThe card's power settings couldn't be read at all.GPU power limit
16High GPU usageThe card was in use when the check ran.High GPU usage
17High GPU temperatureThe card was too hot when the check ran.High GPU usage
18Insufficient VRAM / High VRAM activitySomething is reading and writing the card's memory too heavily.Insufficient VRAM
19GPU drivers out of dateThe installed driver is too old, or not compatible with the CUDA version jobs need.Salad cannot access your GPU
21Salad cannot access your GPUSame cause as 11, found by a different part of the check.Salad cannot access your GPU
22Salad cannot access your GPUSame cause as 12, found by a different part of the check.Salad cannot access your GPU
23GPU failed health testThe card didn't complete the health test.GPU performance low
24Insufficient VRAMSame as 13, measured during the benchmark.Insufficient VRAM
25Insufficient VRAMSame as 13, measured on a second pass.Insufficient VRAM
31Container networking issuesThe container environment couldn't reach Salad's services (TCP).Container networking issues
32Container networking issuesThe container environment couldn't resolve names on the internet (UDP/DNS).Container networking issues
41Unable to run compatibility testThe check itself couldn't run on your GPU.High GPU usage
42GPU performance lowThe benchmark scored below similar GPUs.GPU performance low
101GPU ECC enabledError-correcting memory is on, which reduces usable VRAM.How to disable ECC

Degraded State

What the Degraded State notification in the Salad app means, how to read the error code, and which guide fixes each one.

Failed to update container environment

Fix the "Failed to update container environment" / "WSL kernel updates are required" Degraded State notification, including the cases where wsl --update already says you're up to date.
