Salad sounds too good to be true. What's the catch?

The real limitations of Salad - electricity cost, job availability and hardware requirements - so you can decide with open eyes.

There is no hidden catch, but there are limitations worth knowing before you start:

  • Electricity costs money. Your GPU draws power while it Chops. Container jobs usually pay well above the cost of the electricity they use, but mining often pays only a little more than it costs, and on some tariffs it can lose money. See Calculating profitability and electricity costs.
  • Container jobs are not always available. Jobs come from SaladCloud customers and are assigned to the machines that fit them, so there can be hours or days without one. That is why Salad keeps mining as a backup workload: it sets a floor so you earn something whenever you Chop. See How do I get container jobs?.
  • Earnings depend on your hardware. Newer GPUs with more VRAM get more and better-paying jobs. An old or low-end card may earn very little.
  • Rewards are the way to cash out. Salad Balance is spent in the Storefront on gift cards, games, PayPal and similar rewards; it cannot be withdrawn to a bank account. Reward prices may include a margin for Salad.

When no workload is running, Salad idles and uses very little power, so you are not paying for electricity while earning nothing.

Is Salad legit, or is it a scam?

Salad is a real company that rents out Chefs' idle GPUs to cloud customers. How to verify that for yourself.

Is Salad a virus?

No. Antivirus warnings about Salad are false positives triggered by the open-source miners it bundles.
